I used to attend a day program for over 8 years where I participated in different activities based in both the centre and the community.
I decided that I wanted to develop new skills so that I could get a job, meet new people and try new things. I also wanted to find a way to use of my passion for food.
I decided it was time for a change.
I was able to take my self-managed funding to Break Thru and make my own choices about how to use this funding to achieve my goals. With the support of my family and Break Thru, I developed a plan that draws on my strengths as well as my interests and hopes for my future. I was able to build my skills and attend work trials with experienced Break Thru staff. I made choices about attending both small group training and 1 on 1 meetings with staff and I still enjoy friendships I made during this journey to find a job.
After a couple of months of training and practice I started work in a local cafe and I currently work 12 hours a week. I have achieved my goal!
I am now able to purchase a community based program for the remainder of my week and to employ my own staff member for weekend activities such as going to the football and the movies.
