Without warning my immediate family had to travel overseas for 5 weeks to visit family abroad. My family were concerned because I still live with them and receive support from them. I told them that I didn’t want to go because I don’t like flying and that I didn’t want to attend the respite service either. Although I had previously used this service, I really didn’t want to go back there because it’s noisy and I don’t always like the food.
I asked Break Thru to help and they brought together all the people involved to find a solution I was happy with. Break Thru supported me to quickly access my own staff to visit and support me. Break Thru helped me to access both paid staff and friends to support me to stay in my own home while my immediate family were away. Break Thru taught me how to prepare my own meals, the food I like, and I even baked scones for my friends at the day program. When they came back, my family were overwhelmed by the support: “the house was the cleanest it had ever been” said mum when she arrived home. They were also encouraged by the increased choice and control I have in my everyday decisions.
